It was around a couple of months ago when ZTE was about to release its Tempo Go, a smartphone that runs on Android Oreo (Go Edition) -- or Android Go, for short -- in the United States. But alas, the next few weeks would see the Chinese phone maker get slapped with a seven year long export ban by the US Department of Commerce. Recent developments may suggest that the ban might not last for long, but what is clear is that the company’s Tempo Go release was all but forgotten (okay, a bit of an exaggeration there).
Thankfully, another Android Go device is set to hit store shelves soon -- Alcatel’s 1X. True to its promise, the French mobile manufacturer has revealed recently that the 1X will be launching by way of Amazon starting next week, with a super budget friendly pricing of just a hundred bucks (unlocked). For good measure, the handset will also be landing on Best Buy and Walmart in the weeks to come.
It is always a wise decision to manage one’s expectations when talking about a $100 smartphone. Indeed, the Alcatel 1X will never be mistaken for a flagship device -- but still, those who do choose to purchase the handset will get a 5.3 inch display screen (offering a resolution of 960 by 480 pixels), a MediaTek processor, and a single gigabyte of random access memory (RAM).
What Alcatel’s 1X has got going for it though is the presence of Google’s Android Go. This version of the world’s most widely used mobile operating system gamely trades heavy features for simplicity and efficiency. And the result is that the 1X gets a much more seamless Android experience, because its OS has been streamlined to fits its modest specifications.
Google had originally intended its Android Go to help mobile users in developing countries, wherein the majority of consumers simply could not afford to buy a high end flagship smartphone. But it is really nice that Android Go is also made available in the United States mobile market, wherein a good chunk of users also still purchase cheap handsets. Granted, the options are still severely limited for now.
But there is hope -- the Nokia 2.1 (which was unveiled earlier this week) is expected to launch in America in July later this year. The follow up to last year’s Nokia 2 delivers a 5.5 inch HD screen, a pair of stereo speakers on the front side, an 8 megapixel rear side main camera, a 5 megapixel front side selfie shooter, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 425 chip, and a monster 4,000 mAh battery that gives two days of normal use.
