Samsung has recently announced that its Bixby digital assistant has now expanded in more than 200 countries across the globe. For those still not familiar with the voice controlled feature, Bixby is basically the South Korean tech giant’s answer to Apple’s Siri or Google’s Assistant. The global roll out of Bixby has not been smooth -- when Samsung’s current flagship device, the Galaxy S8, had launched back in March early this year, the voice assistant was not able to ship with the smartphone. Still, Samsung was able to deploy a preview version last June, and then by the following month, it had made Bixby available in the United States mobile market.
But before fans of Samsung get a little too excited, it bears noting that while Bixby’s availability has been extended to over 200 countries around the world, only those who own the aforementioned Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will be able to start making full use of the voice assistant for now.
It goes without saying that Samsung’s larger objective is to have Bixby also made available in other Galaxy devices, but as of the moment, no formal announcement has been made yet with regards to which Samsung handsets next will get the feature. There are rumors circulating that Samsung has plans to launch a smart speaker of its own. If this turns out to be true, then it should be proof that the mobile manufacturer is looking to expand Bixby’s use beyond the usual Galaxy mobile devices.
Around a month ago, Samsung had pointed out that Bixby is not just an ordinary voice assistant, but rather an intelligent and interactive interface that users can take full advantage of in optimizing their mobile experience. According to the phone maker, Bixby can follow specific verbal commands, such as create reminders to complete a task later in the day, or explore images from a recent trip. Users can even request Bixby to scroll through multiple layers in the menu in just a single step even if the Samsung phone is locked. The feature also gives users the ability to toggle settings and set easy, personalized commands instead of wordy instructions. The digital assistant even comes with its own dedicated button found on the side of Galaxy S8 smartphones, which means that users can launch the feature even without resorting to verbal commands.
