Earlier this week, Apple has deployed security updates for its operating systems, in order to deliver a fix for a message bug that causes mobile apps to shut down when trying to render a specific Indian symbol. This bug was discovered just a week ago, and it mostly affects iOS apps that can display characters, including popular services such as Facebook, Twitter, Messages, and even Instagram. What happened was that when an app tries to display a certain Indian character in the Telugu language, that app proceeds to crash and even become inaccessible by Apple users.
To address the issue, this week has seen Apple roll out updates for the following operating systems:
The bug was first spotted by Mobile World last week. Because the bug also affects other apps that come with the ability to display characters, the scope of the bug’s damage is potentially greater -- not only affecting common messaging services and social media platforms, but also widely known apps such as Gmail, WhatsApp, and even Outlook. When hit, disgruntled users often only have one option -- to uninstall the affected app, and then re-install the same app, in order for that service to become accessible once again.
Before this latest message bug, Apple also had found itself dealing with another bug, chaiOS. This earlier bug had brought problems for Apple users by causing their devices to freeze and sometimes restart. The chaiOS bug basically came disguised as a regular GitHub link, but when that link is texted to another iOS or Mac user, it causes all sorts of technical issues. And while the chaiOS bug was not as serious as the latest message bug, it sure was annoying. According to reports, the bug had affected Apple devices that have iOS versions 10.0 to 11.2.5 beta 5 installed.
Less than a week after the chaiOS bug had grabbed headlines, Apple had done well in issuing a new iOS update that came with a fix for the bug. More recently, the company was also quick enough to deploy an update that should take care of the newer message bug. For more information about the new updates, it might be best to go visit Apple’s support page.
