Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at KGI Securities, has always had an impressive record forecasting developments regarding Apple products. This time around, as reported by AppleInsider, the analyst has released a new research note that lays out the probable upgrades that the next iPhone model (most likely called iPhone 6s -- that is, if Apple remains consistent with past naming conventions) will potentially feature.
Among the upgrades that Kuo mentioned was a rose gold casing color option, new materials for the body, a camera upgrade, and the addition of the Force Touch feature. Kuo also added that the new iPhone could have an extra microphone (for improving the quality of voice calls), and some options of the variant of iPhone 6's bigger sibling, the iPhone 6 Plus, could utilize sapphire display screens that boasts better resistance to scratches and other damages -- although Kuo notes that Apple will still have to conduct extensive drop testing protocols before putting these display screens into production.
Camera nuts may be excited to know that Kuo also mentioned that the next iPhone model will come with a 12 megapixel camera. For years, Apple has stuck with a resolution level of 8 megapixels for its flagship devices. Although it has made some improvements even while sticking to 8 megapixels, taking it to the next level (12 megapixels) is not only a huge step forward, but also a very logical one. After all, we are now entering an era of increasingly dense high resolution display screens. Having a higher resolution camera would no doubt give future iPhone users even more flexibility in capturing images.
As for the Force Touch feature, this has the potential of being the number one factor in encouraging current iPhone users to upgrade to the next model. Apple's new pressure sensitive input technology opens up a lot of possibilities for users in terms of the range of interaction, not only in inputting itself, but also in playing games, watching media, and other yet to be explored applications.
Of course, nothing is certain yet, and as good as Kuo's forecasting track record has been in the past few years, only Apple knows for sure what it is cooking up for its next iPhone model. And although Apple more or less follows a pattern (releasing major upgrades to its iPhone lineup every other year while deploying incremental upgrades for the years in between), the company is also notoriously secretive. So it may take a while before we can know for sure if Kuo had it right.
