A few days ago, AT&T has announced that it is extending its NumberSync service (introduced back in October earlier this year) to Samsung’s smartwatch offering, the Gear S2. Now, owners of the Gear S2 will be able to make use of their primary mobile phone numbers on the wearable device to make and take voice calls and even for text messaging purposes.
So how do users of Samsung’s Gear S2 smartwatch get started on using the NumberSync service? For current subscribers of AT&T who own the Samsung device, they can access the feature via a software update. As for those yet to sign up with the wireless carrier, the NumberSync service will be made available upon the initial setup process.
What makes the NumberSync service so handy is that it allows smartwatches and other wearable devices to get connected directly to an existing network instead of making use of a Bluetooth connection. Subscribers who take advantage of this feature can have just one single mobile phone number and use it across more than one mobile device, even at times when their smartphone is switched off or disconnected to the network. Interestingly, rival major wireless carriers such as T-Mobile and Sprint have stated that they are also currently developing a similar service that has the ability to share one single mobile phone number across several mobile devices.
As for Samsung’s Gear S2 smartwatch, it now holds the distinction of being the first mobile device to have support for the NumberSync feature. The South Korean tech giant officially unveiled the wearable device back in September earlier this year. The smartwatch comes with a 1.2 inch Super AMOLED display screen with a resolution of 360 by 360 pixels. It is also powered by a 1 GigaHertz twin core processor, and features Wi-Fi, near field communications (NFC), and Bluetooth connectivity.
Apart from extending its NumberSync service to the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch, AT&T also took the opportunity to introduce a new special offer for the holidays that feature the wearable device. Indeed, the second biggest wireless carrier in the United States is offering the smartwatch for $99.99 with a two year contract. It should be noted that the wearable device needs its own Mobile Share Value plan, which typically starts at $30 for a new plan, or an extra $10 with a current plan.
