The second biggest wireless carrier in America has taken the opportunity to improve a couple of its budget friendly prepaid GoPhone options just recently, but the caveats should not be taken lightly. For the first prepaid plan, unlimited data is made available for $60 a month, and already comes with just 3 mbps of data, plus the connection speeds will slow down even further after the customer goes beyond the 22 gigabyte limit. Meanwhile, the second prepaid plan offers a more affordable $45 a month price as well as a more generous 6 gigabytes of fast data. However, the customer will be throttled to 128K when he consumes more data than what is allotted. And while it is true that these two options will need an Auto Pay option, customers will not have to sign an agreement or go through a credit check.
For those not looking closely, AT&T has been aggressively making changes and upgrades to its prepaid mobile plans over the last couple of years, even going as far as implementing similar restructuring to its non-prepaid options. Among the more recent deals, the pricier tier brings unlimited voice calls, text messaging, and data, but will be slowing down connection speeds beyond data caps (according to a report published by OpenSignal last month, nearly fifty percent of the major US wireless carrier’s normal throughput). It goes without saying that unlimited data is always an appealing proposition, but when customers are limited to standard definition video content at 480p and there is no promise of being able to use one’s handset as a hotspot, this might cause some interested parties to have second thoughts.
It definitely counts as an affordable means for acquiring unlimited data, but if a customer needs unlimited data in the first place, he probably is looking to browse a lot of websites or view a lot video content. This has led some industry watchers to view this latest prepaid GoPhone deal as more of an unlimited 3G deal in a 4G LTE world.
The last time that AT&T made changes to its prepaid GoPhone mobile plans was in May of last year when it increased the data caps by one gigabyte. This meant that people under the $45 a month plan back now got to enjoy 3 gigabytes of high speed data instead of just two, and those under the $60 a month plan now had 6 gigabytes of data instead of the previous 5 gigabytes.
