AT&T has just announced that it has launched its Fixed Wireless Internet service in nine additional states in America. These states are Arkansas, California, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin. So far, the second biggest wireless carrier in the United States has rolled out the service in 18 states in total.
According to AT&T, this latest round of deployments has allowed the major US mobile operator to cover 160,000 locations, a number that is easily more than two fold what the company had rolled out back in June earlier this year (more in this later). Before the start of next year, the carrier is looking to reach more than 400,000 locations across the country, and by the end of the decade, grant access to more than 1.1 million locations throughout America.
For those still not familiar with AT&T’s Fixed Wireless Internet service, it made its debut in the state of Georgia back in April earlier this year. The offering is actually part of the mobile carrier’s participation in the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Connect America Fund. The overall objective of this project was to provide Internet connectivity to an estimated 23 million users based in rural areas, especially those locations with zero or unreliable broadband coverage.
In terms of performance, the Fixed Wireless Internet service basically provides a home Internet connection that can deliver download speeds of at least 10 mbps, and upload speeds of at least 1 mbps. This Internet connection is made possible by way of a wireless tower that connects to a fixed antenna installed in the homes of users or in business offices. With this set up, Internet connectivity can be provided for customers even in underserved locations.
Last June, AT&T had revealed that it had successfully deployed its Fixed Wireless Internet service to 70,000 locations spread throughout nine states, namely Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia (where the service was first introduced), Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
Interestingly, AT&T’s latest announcement comes a couple of days after another carrier, C Spire Wireless, revealed that it had launched its own fixed wireless service in the state of Mississippi. Specifically, C Spire’s roll out spans eight initial locations within the Magnolia State, namely Greenville, Vicksburg, Columbus, Greenwood, Indianola, West Point, Belzoni, and Louisville. C Spire is planning to price its offering at $55 per month (with zero caps on the usage).
