Despite the fact that Samsung’s new flagships -- the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus -- will not hit store shelves everywhere until this Friday (March 16th), apparently the South Korean tech giant is already rolling out the first ever software update for the devices. Indeed, a user named ironkid65 recently spotted an update prompt, and then proceeded to share a screenshot of that prompt on Reddit. Based on the screenshot, the update is designated as version G965USQU1ARBG/G965UOYN1ARBG/G965USQU1ARBG, and has a size of 259.99 megabytes.
A couple of items have also been included in the software update description. The first one talks about improving the stability of the Face Unlock feature, while the second item refers to the improvement of the stability of the camera. Face Unlock, of course, is the Galaxy S9 models’ answer to the iPhone X’s Face ID technology, but many may argue that Apple’s tech is more polished and secure.
In relation to the camera update, it should be mentioned that the Galaxy S9 Plus is the second ever Samsung smartphone to sport a dual camera configuration on the rear side (the first one to do so was last year’s Galaxy Note 8 phablet). The company is highlighting the capabilities of the Galaxy S9 models’ camera, which include a variable aperture for capturing cleaner and more illuminated images, and ultra slow motion video footage recording.
In other related news, Samsung has announced this week that it is looking to join forces with uBreakiFix in order to offer same day repair services for Galaxy smartphones. This particular arrangement will start to take effect this March 15th. For those users whose Galaxy handsets badly need some fixing, they can either schedule an appointment online, or choose to drop off their ailing devices at any one of uBreakiFix’s locations (there are more than 300 to date). The time it takes for the repairs to be completed usually varies depending on the device being serviced and the nature of the damage or defect, but according to Samsung, most types of repairs normally get done in a couple of hours, give or take.
Before, owners of broken Galaxy handsets have enjoyed the option of making a call or initiating a chat conversation in order to avail of technical support from a Samsung customer service representative, searching for the closest phone repair service shop, or shipping their unit to a company facility.
