Apple is formally unveiling the (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition versions of two of its flagship device offerings last year, specifically the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus. These variants will be officially released this coming April 13th, although in some countries and mobile markets, customers can start ordering online as early as April 10th.
For this year’s (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition iPhones, the design is rendered in an elegant glass rear casing in mesmerizing red color, paired with an all black front panel that is complemented with an aluminum band.
As pointed out by Greg Joswiak, the vice president of product marketing at Apple, the striking red and black color combo of the iPhone 8 (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition models represent a tribute to the global fight against the spread of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) and HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).
Deborah Dugan, the chief executive officer of (RED), also took the opportunity to recognize Apple’s contributions to the cause. According to her, Apple has donated over $160 million in nearly a dozen years (making the tech giant the biggest corporate donor to date), equating to over 800 million days of lifesaving antiretroviral (ARV) medication that prevents HIV from being transmitted from infected mothers to their infants.
According to the official press release, part of the proceeds from sales of all (PRODUCT)RED handsets and accessories are directed to Global Fund HIV or AIDS grants. Such grants in turn finance and support programs that revolve around the testing, counseling, treatment, and prevention of AIDS, with an added emphasis on stopping the disease from getting contracted by infants from their afflicted mothers.
Apart from introducing the iPhone 8 (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition models, Apple also debuted a new (PRODUCT)RED iPhone X Leather Folio. As suggested by its name, this accessory is specifically designed for owners of last year’s iPhone X flagship. The new folio is expertly fashioned from specially tanned and finished top quality European leather. The (PRODUCT)RED iPhone X Leather folio is priced at $99.
It was around this time last year when Apple also launched the (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition models of its 2016 flagship devices, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. Whereas this year’s iPhone 8 (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition variants come with a red and black color combo, the 2017 (PRODUCT)RED iPhone offerings adopted a red and white theme.
