It is now official. For this year, Apple is releasing a trio of new iPhone models, namely the iPhone X, and the iPhone 8, and the iPhone 8 Plus, which are basically follow ups to last year’s iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus devices. Although Apple will start accepting preorders for the iPhone X at October 27th at the earliest, the tech giant is making the iPhone 8 models available sooner, specifically on September 15th - this coming Friday (more on these later).
Much has been written about the iPhone X prior to its unveiling. But now that the device has been formally introduced, we can now start talking about the actual specs and features instead of speculated ones. Perhaps the most visible feature of the iPhone X is its bezel-less, all display appearance. With all that screen real estate, it is pretty understandable why Apply had to decide to do away with its iconic home button. Still, its absence also made way for a new face recognition scanner called Face ID that people can use to unlock the device. Of course, the face scanning tech would not be made possible without the A11 Bionic chip, which is said to come with four cores that perform up to 70 percent faster than the A10 Fusion chip. The A11 is expected to feature in future iPhone models from now on.
The iPhone X’s other cool features include 12 megapixel wide angle and telephoto cameras on the rear side, and a 7 megapixel TrueDepth camera on the front side. This TrueDepth camera is critical because much of the Face ID feature is facilitated through this camera and of course, with the help of the A11 Bionic chip.
So in what other areas does the iPhone X improve upon? Well, it offers the 5.8 inch Super Retina display, better camera specs (see preceding paragraph), enhanced speakers, support for the Qi wireless charging standard (yey), and ANIMOJI, which is basically a feature that allows users to transform their own facial expressions into animated emoji.
And now for the iPhone 8 (4.7 inches) and the iPhone 8 Plus (5.5 inches). Both models sport the A11 Bionic chip found on the iPhone X, Apple’s new Retina HD display, 12 megapixel cameras on the rear, a 7 megapixel sensor on the front, and Qi wireless charging. The devices also feature an all glass design, and water and dust resistance.
With regards to pricing and availability, the iPhone X starts at $999 for the 64 gigabyte edition, and will sure to be sold by the Big Four carriers in the United States (namely Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint). The device can be preordered starting on October 27th. As for the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus, the former starts at $699 while the latter at $799. Both devices can be preordered starting September 15th.
