Nearly a week ago, Apple had claimed that its newest flagship devices -- the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus -- will sell out. However, the company also expressed that it had no plans of revealing initial sales numbers for its latest iPhone models. Thankfully, two major US wireless carriers -- T-Mobile and Sprint -- have taken it upon themselves to give everybody an idea of how the new iPhone devices are faring, specifically in terms of preorder sales.
T-Mobile has reported that the latest iPhone offerings have gone on to surpass preorder numbers from previous iPhone models offered by the wireless carrier. T-Mobile also pointed out that over the course of the weekend, preorders increased almost four fold compared to the next most popular iPhone model. Moreover, last Friday, the iPhone 7 devices set a new single day sales record for any mobile device ever sold by T-Mobile.
As for Sprint, the fourth biggest wireless carrier in the United States claimed that preorders of the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus have risen over 375 percent in the first three days compared to last year’s models (the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus).
Following the preorder sales revelations from T-Mobile and Sprint, industry watchers from Wells Fargo wrote in an investors note that by achieving very robust preorder numbers this early, Apple should gain some momentum that should be helpful overall in its fourth quarter results later on. These analysts also went on to observe that the favorable preorder sales are quite consistent with the strong efforts by wireless carriers in pushing the new iPhone 7 devices. All of the Big Four mobile operators in the US mobile market (namely, Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint) have all offered a free iPhone 7 handset to new and current subscribers who decide to trade in an existing iPhone 6 unit (in good working order) and sign up for a two year financing option.
As speculated by experts from New Street, both T-Mobile and Sprint have benefitted the most from the release of Apple’s newest iPhone models. After polling a thousand respondents, New Street found that a tenth of all those surveyed have plans to transfer to another carrier in the next three to four months mostly because they wanted to get a new iPhone device.
Apple also recently started rolling out the finished version of its iOS 10 mobile operating system, as well as watchOS 3, the newest iteration of its operating system for wearable devices. Speaking of wearables, Apple also introduced its Apple Watch Series 2, together with the unveiling of the new iPhone models.
