In terms of media exposure, LG’s flagship device, the G5, may have been slightly overshadowed by fellow South Korean phone maker Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge recently (Samsung’s flagship offerings are set to launch in the United States on March 11th, with major US wireless carriers AT&T and T-Mobile announcing separate buy one, get one special offers for both Galaxy devices). Not helping matters is that LG has not exactly provided any timeline yet for the release of its highly acclaimed modular smartphone.
But that changes today as the mobile manufacturer confirmed that the LG G5 device will launch in early April. All in all, this is pretty consistent with recent reports that LG Canada had also announced a couple of days ago that the LG G5 will makes its debut in the Great White North on April 8th of this year.
With a timeline confirmed, there is no doubt various wireless carriers in America will follow soon in announcing their own respective release dates for LG’s latest flagship offering. After all, the Big Four wireless carriers -- Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint -- have all pledged to sell the handset, the only question now is when exactly. Apart from the Big Four, carriers and retailers such as Best Buy, Best Buy Mobile Stores, B&H, and US Cellular are also expected to push the LG G5 starting this April.
Interestingly, LG is actually making things a bit more fun by also launching a lineup of “LG Friends” which consists of other devices that should launch with or soon after its flagship device. These LG Friends can be plugged into the LG G5 to transform it into either a DSLR style camera, a mobile virtual reality viewer, and other permutations. The devices include the South Korean mobile manufacturer’s virtual reality headset, the Camera Plus and LG’s new 360 degree camera. As for those hoping for the high fidelity audio DAC that LG built in collaboration with Danish company Bang & Olufsen, they may be disappointed. The same goes for the company’s BB-8-ish Rolling Bot.
LG has gathered some momentum in the wake of this year’s recently concluded Mobile World Congress tech conference held in the city of Barcelona in Spain a few days ago where the South Korean phone maker managed to garner no less than 33 awards. The LG G5, which the company introduced around the time the event kicked off, even collected the Best New Smartphone award. Come April, mobile users will experience for themselves what the flagship device is really all about. To browse more LG devices, you can start comparing phones and plans from LG at Wirefly now.
