According to a report recently released by financial services company IHS Markit, the volume of shipments of smartphones that feature a display with a built in fingerprint scanner will go over a hundred million units by next year. For some context, the current projected number for this year is at a significantly more tame 9 million units.
Under display fingerprint readers are poised to become even more popular in the next months or years to come. What makes the feature so cool is that it basically allows phone makers to integrate the fingerprint sensing functionality directly into their smartphone’s screen. On top of that, an invisible fingerprint scanner makes for a more elegant design, at least when compared to traditional set ups wherein you can clearly see the eye either on the rear side of a handset or on the front panel.
As it indicated in its latest Display Fingerprint Technology & Market Report for this year, IHS Markit is estimating that during the next three years, the population of smartphones that come with an in-screen fingerprint reader will continue to see an upward trend, likely lead by some of the biggest brands in the world of mobile, including of course Samsung (the number one smartphone vendor across the globe) and aggressive Chinese phone makers such as Huawei, Xiaomi, and Vivo.
Of the mobile manufacturers mentioned in the preceding paragraph, Vivo and Huawei deserve some special mentions, especially for being two of the first to do it. Vivo’s X20 Plus UD phablet is generally viewed as probably the first ever smartphone release in the world to be equipped with an under display fingerprint sensor. About three months ago, the device had made its commercial debut in Vivo’s native homeland, China. As for Huawei, some may remember that last March, the tech giant had unveiled the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS smartphone, which boasts an in-screen fingerprint scanner that can be activated by simply moving one’s finger over the front panel.
After Vivo and Huawei, it is a good bet that some players in the industry will be wanting to join in on the under-display fingerprint scanning tech party, too. As the industry leader, Samsung is expected by many to also introduce its own take on the concept. The only question is when -- the South Korean phone maker has not confirmed yet if it will be employing the technology for its next flagship offering, the Galaxy Note 9 phablet, which is slated to debut later this year.
