Yup, it appears that HTC is not the only tech company busy developing a smartphone dedicated to blockchain. As a matter of fact, Sirin Labs is also joining in on the party, thanks to a partnership struck with electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn back in April earlier this year.
Come November later this year, Sirin Labs will be releasing the Finney smartphone. This handset is actually inspired by Hal Finney (hence the device’s name), a Bitcoin trail blazer. As far as physical design is concerned, the Sirin Finney is kind of reminiscent of an earlier Sirin phone -- the Solarin privacy phone (which fetches for a jaw dropping fourteen grand). Indeed, the Finney’s teardrop camera frame will look familiar to those who already know of Sirin’s Solarin.
There are some interesting aspects to the design, however. For one, the top section of the back plate can slide up (a la an old school Nokia slider handset). When the user pulls out the back, they will get to see a secondary screen. Dubbed as the Safe Screen, this display can only be used for crypto transactions.
According to Sirin Labs, the Safe Screen utilizes dedicated firmware that basically allows users to check where their cryptocurrency is being sent before they complete a payment transaction. The Finney’s slider also serves as an enabling mechanism for the cold storage wallet, which should be capable of storing a huge number of various forms of cryptocurrency.
Similar to Solarin’s mobile operating system, the software on Sirin’s Finney smartphone is a version of Google’s Android that is modified to be more safe. This goes without saying -- the handset, after all, is built to gain access to a specific blockchain driven app store and the cold storage wallet mentioned earlier in this post.
Another feature to watch out is the Token Conversion Service (TCS). This acts as a sort of automatic broker -- it trades the user’s SRN coins (the Finney network’s default currency) into the tokens needed to complete a certain purchase.
Software aside, what about the hardware specifications? They are not bad actually -- the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip set is supported by 6 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) as well as 128 gigabytes of built in storage. The main display screen is complemented with a 12 megapixel main camera on the rear side, and an 8 megapixel selfie shooter on the front side. The Finney is also armed with a fingerprint reader and a 3,280 mAh battery.
