According to the results of a survey (Taking Stock With Teens) recently conducted by Piper Jaffray, 81 percent of teenagers are expecting their next handset to be an iPhone device. This represents an improvement over the 79 percent as polled by the financial services firm in fall of last year, and also marks the highest percentage ever observed by the company.
Piper Jaffray considers its survey as a positive data point of the demand for Apple’s iPhone 7, at the same time serving as an indication that there is indeed palpable excitement for the upcoming iPhone 8, which will launch later this year. Moreover, the firm noted that current ownership is at its highest -- more than three fourths (76 percent) of teenagers surveyed claim they already own an iPhone device, registering a small increase in percentage compared to last fall.
When it comes to wearable devices, the results of Piper Jaffray’s latest survey shows that interest in the Apple Watch is still modest. 13 percent of all teenagers surveyed have revealed plans to purchase Apple’s smartwatch device in the next six months. Still, it bears noting that compared to last year’s 11 percent, this is an improved mark. As expected, Fitbit has held on to its title as the world’s most dominant fitness band brand (and number one fitness mobile app), even among teenage users, with 71 percent of them saying Fitbit is their favorite brand, compared to only 10 percent for Apple.
Piper Jaffray’s newest survey also shed some light on which social media brands were most popular with teenage mobile users. A commanding 81 percent of teenagers are using the Snapchat mobile app at least once every month. The firm had asked teenagers regarding their favorite social media platform, particularly in terms of use and preference, and just like in the previous survey, Snapchat has managed to be the preferred brand.
The Taking Stock With Teens survey is conducted twice every year by Piper Jaffray. In completing this survey, the firm had collected information from an estimated 5,500 teenager respondents, with an average age of 16 years old. The overall purpose of the survey is to determine purchasing and spending habits among teenagers, as well as identify the latest fashion trends, and brand and media preferences among the youth across the United States.
