Virgin Mobile, the recently rebranded prepaid arm of Sprint, has recently decided to expand its $1 a year unlimited wireless service deal to customers who already are owners of iPhone devices. These customers need only activate their own iPhone on Virgin’s network and then transfer their current phone number to the mobile operator’s Inner Circle offering.
For those interested to avail of this extended deal, know that they can order a free SIM card through September 29th. Beyond that date, the SIM card will no longer be free, but instead cost $25. After the first year of unlimited mobile service is completed, Virgin Mobile will then charge the usual $50 a month rate. Customers, however, can opt to add six extra months of service for $1 every time they upgrade to a new iPhone model.
It was back in June earlier this year when Sprint relaunched Virgin Mobile as a wireless carrier that only sells iPhone devices. Along with the rebranding, a special offer was also launched, one that offered a whole year’s wireless service for just $1. The deal was only supposed to last until July 31st of this year, but about three weeks ago, Virgin had chosen to extend the promo until the end of this month.
Just like in any other deal, customers need to be aware of the caveats in Virgin Mobile’s offer. For one, connection speeds may be “deprioritized” once customers go beyond the 23 gigabyte limit in any given month. Also, voice call minutes are capped at 800 minutes every month, and domestic data roaming is capped at 100 megabytes every month. Lastly, video streaming is capped at 480 p plus resolution, music streaming to 500 kbps, and streaming cloud gaming to 2 mbps.
More than a month ago, BayStreet Research had projected that Virgin Mobile’s Inner Circle offering could help the carrier sell as many as 300,000 iPhone units. Furthermore, with Sprint’s iPhone Forever plan, customers are granted the opportunity to upgrade their iPhone devices each year. Sure, giving customers one whole year of wireless service for just one dollar may be costly, but if it attracts enough sign ups, it could translate to consistent prepaid earnings for Virgin and for Sprint in the long run. It appears that Sprint’s efforts in the prepaid market are now starting to pay off, and the only thing it needs to do now is sustain the momentum.
