Google has launched its Google Voice app as a way for users to have a second phone number. Through this second number, you can make phone calls and send/receive text messages.
If you plan to use Google Voice for personal communication, the service is free and works on Android, iOS, and on the web. The only condition is that you use the Google-provided phone number to make or receive a call once throughout a six-month period. Otherwise, the assigned number will go back to Google for another subscriber to use. Google Voice can also save voicemail messages and even transcribe these for future reference.
For business users, Google is offering three tiers that cost up to $30 per month. The Starter tier lets you have up to 10 users and make calls to 10 domestic locations at $10 per month per user. Meanwhile, the Standard tier has no cap on the number of users and lets you make unlimited domestic calls for $20 per month per user. Lastly, the Premier tier lets you make unlimited domestic and international calls and have no cap on the number of users. This plan costs $30 per month per user.
As revealed by Android Central, Google Voice will make sure you have the best experience in your calls by automatically switching ongoing calls “between cellular data service and Wi-Fi when it determines that one network type will lead to better call quality.” Prior to this announcement, the app only identified the ideal network at the time the call was made and will not make any changes to improve network performance during a call.
