Verizon and AT&T have long put their 2G networks to rest. And now, it looks like T-Mobile will also be shutting down its 2G GSM network. After all, it has been three decades since this network standard was launched. And with wireless carriers making room for 5G, this is only an expected move.
The Mobile Report obtained a document that the Un-carrier sent out to affected customers. The notices were sent via physical mail, email, and text.
If you’re still using a 2G device, you may receive the notice too. The notice says that T-Mobile will be shutting down its 2G GSM network on April 2, 2024. Although that’s still several months away, it’s enough time to make arrangements and move to a newer network. If you opt not to do anything, your line will be canceled.
In line with this, T-Mobile is actually giving affected customers a budget 5G smartphone. You can choose from the following options:
OnePlus Nord N300 5G
TCL 30 XE 5G
Apple iPhone SE (2022)
These phones are offered for free only to customers who will be affected by the network shutdown. So if you won’t receive the notice, you’re likely safe and won’t have to worry about anything.
