The major carriers in the country are on a quest to fight the spot as the best 5G network provider. And to ensure this happens, they have to obtain additional spectrum by getting permission to use it.
Earlier this week, T-Mobile agreed to purchase Comcast’s airwaves. The deal allows T-Mobile to acquire Comcast’s 600MHz spectrum license for an undisclosed amount. But as The Mobile Report speculates, the deal could be between $1.2 to $3.3 billion.
By purchasing these airwaves, T-Mobile is able to get an additional 10MHz of spectrum. It will also improve its network in rural and suburban areas in the US.
The spectrum being referenced in this deal is the one that Comcast won in the 2017 spectrum auction. Since it currently has no use for it, the cable company has agreed to sell the spectrum to the Un-carrier for billions of dollars.
While this may sound great on paper, customers won’t be able to enjoy this spectrum anytime soon. In fact, the transfer filings are only expected to be submitted by 2027. And if all falls into schedule, the deal could be closed in the first half of 2028.
This means that it’ll be 4-5 years before customers will be able to see this deal into fruition. But when it does, it will greatly improve T-Mobile’s network speed.
