Google is rolling out a feature that lets Pixel 9 users share files directly with iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers. This cross-platform compatibility has been available on the newer Pixel 10, but now it's expanding to earlier Pixel models, making it easier for Android and Apple users to exchange documents, photos, and other content seamlessly.
According to 9to5Google, the tech company is introducing this capability through an updated Quick Share extension. The feature works by letting iPhone and iPad users open their AirDrop settings and toggle to "Everyone for 10 minutes." Once that's done, Android users can use their Quick Share feature as normal and select the Apple device they want to send files to. The recipient just needs to approve the transfer. Google created this functionality independently while maintaining strong security protections, ensuring that shared content goes directly between devices without being stored on servers or logged.
To get started on your Pixel 9, you'll need to manually install the latest Quick Share Extension. Open Settings, search for "System services," find the Available Updates section, and tap Quick Share Extension to update it. Google notes that this rollout is happening gradually and will be available to everyone over the coming weeks.
One thing to keep in mind: the Pixel 9a is not included in this update. Google has designed the connection to be peer-to-peer, meaning your data stays private and isn't shared with third parties. The company has expressed openness to working with Apple to eventually enable a "Contacts Only" mode, which would streamline sharing even further by automatically recognizing people you know.
