Just this week, Apple has announced that it is planning to soon roll out an update to its iOS mobile operating system that will give owners of old iPhone models the freedom to deactivate the software that slows down the processing speed of their iPhone units. Beginning last month, the tech giant had drawn flak from its users after it had fully admitted that it was indeed intentionally slowing down iPhone models in order to protect the devices’ batteries. This was done by way of a software feature that would decrease the processing speed to prevent iPhones from shutting down randomly when insufficiently charged or when used in cold weather.
As for the upcoming iOS update, it will be included with the deployment of iOS 11.3. With this new feature, iOS mobile users will be getting a notification or a reminder that their iPhone’s battery may need to be serviced. In addition to this, owners of old iPhones will be able to check if the power management tool is activated or not. This power management tool is the feature that is controlling an iPhone’s processing speed, and users can soon decide if they want to disable the functionality as they like. About a week ago, Tim Cook, the chief executive officer of Apple, had made mention of this upcoming feature.
For those owners of old iPhone devices that are currently directly affected by the slowing down, they might have to exercise a little bit of patience. The iOS 11.3 update will not be made available to Apple users until the later part of March this year at the soonest. It is likely that Apple will roll out the iOS 11.3 update to beta users first.
The new battery feature, however, will almost certainly be deployed through a separate beta release later. According to Apple, the feature will be included as an additional option in the Battery section in Settings. Moreover, the functionality will be accessible by owners of iPhone models that include the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus, the iPhone SE, the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 6s Plus, the iPhone 7, and the iPhone 7 Plus devices.
There is plenty to be excited about with regards to the upcoming iOS 11.3 update. Apart from the usual tweaks and bug fixes, the release also offers new animoji options, as well as enhancements for ARKit (Apple’s augmented reality platform), just to name a couple.
