Lately, there has been much excitement brewing over under-screen fingerprint scanners, especially with recent news that Vivo’s newest flagship device offering, the X21, was already beginning its global launch. Vivo knows something about in-display fingerprint sensors -- after all, it had showcased what many consider as the first ever under-screen fingerprint reader on a prototype phone earlier this year during the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in the city of Las Vegas in Nevada last January.
Other phone makers are likely to join in on the under-screen fingerprint scanner fun -- perhaps even including the biggest in the world, Samsung. According to a report recently published by The Bell, it appears that by next year, the South Korean tech giant may be taking a leaf from Apple’s book by releasing its own tenth year anniversary super handset, which will probably be called the Galaxy S10. And yup, rumor has it that the Galaxy S10 (instead of this year's upcoming Galaxy Note 9) will be equipped with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Apart from adapting a new fingerprint scanner technology, there is additional speculation that the first of Samsung’s flagship devices next year will come with a 3D camera on the front side (as earlier rumored). When the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus made their debut back in February earlier this year, they showcased a facial recognition tech called Face Unlock, which featured the South Korean mobile manufacturer’s own Intelligent Scan system (which combines both facial and iris scanning). But many felt that despite being impressive in its own right, Face Unlock could not quite compete with the Face ID tech featured in Apple’s iPhone X last year. The rumored front facing 3D camera should try to fix that.
Meanwhile, in other related news, Samsung has taken the opportunity to clarify that a number of mobile apps from Oath (the brand that combines both Yahoo and AOL properties by Verizon Wireless) will indeed be installed not only on brand new Galaxy S9 units, but also on other existing Galaxy devices by way of a software update deployment. But wait -- the company further explains that Oath apps will only land on Verizon’s Galaxy S9 handsets. Galaxy S9 owners signed up under the Big Red need not panic though -- the apps can be removed if they like. By the way, the apps include the Oath Newsroom app, Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Finance, and Go90.
Lastly, here is good news for Galaxy S7 owners -- Samsung has announced that Google’s Android 8.0 Oreo will be arriving to the 2016 models before the end of this month. As a matter of fact, a few users have already reported seeing the update roll out.
