With the new iOS 9 powering its software, Apple’s next iPad Mini offering may come with a split view feature that will already be found on the iPad Air 2. Apple actually teased a split screen mode when it demoed its upcoming latest version of its iOS mobile operating system during the Worldwide Developers Conference held back in June earlier this year. This feature basically lets iPad users to run and display two apps side by side simultaneously (similar to how your desktop computers can show more than one window at the same time).
Apple had given the impression that the split view feature would only be present on the current iPad Air 2 installed with the upcoming iOS 9 system on account of the device’s more powerful A8X chip plus beefier internal storage. However, a resource file related to the next version of Apple’s Safari web browser is suggesting that the iPad Mini 4 may also possess this feature, as reported by 9to5Mac.
If this turns out to be true, then Apple will have given consumers another cool reason to purchase iPads and tablets in general. In the last few quarters, tablet makers have seen sales of this mobile device declining alarmingly, and even Apple is not immune to the slow sales. During the second quarter of the year, the market share of Apple’s iPad devices decreased to 24.5 percent compared to the 27.7 percent it managed during the same period in the previous year. Mobile users nowadays just do not buy tablets because of the rising popularity of phablets (smartphones with big display screens), which are essentially mini tablets. As for those who do own tablets, they no longer have a reason to buy a new one because -- let us face it -- tablets have not really offered anything new in terms of innovation and major new features in the last few years.
But that will change with the new split view feature. Come to think of it -- a split screen mode on a tablet would not only be really cool, but also useful. You no longer have to minimize everything just to get back to that app you opened a few seconds ago. As for its application on Apple’s iPads, the feature would definitely be more suite to the iPad Air 2, which has a screen size of 9.7 inches diagonally. The iPad Mini only has a screen size of 7.9 inches, so the split screen feature may not offer much viewing space for a couple of apps. But if the rumored 12.9 iPad Pro will come into light, this device will definitely be perfect for a split view mode.
Apple has an upcoming launch event on September 9th of this year. Apart from the anticipated unveiling of a new iPhone, we can also reasonably expect, or at least hope that Apple will demo its new iPads.
