Apparently so, at least according to the results of a recent survey conducted by the American Consumer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). In the ACSI report, the iPhone SE was ranked as the number one smartphone in terms of customer satisfaction. This is intriguing because the iPhone SE even managed to beat Apple’s newest flagship offering, the iPhone 7.
The ACSI’s survey also offers an interesting and even contrasting take with regards to prevailing smartphone trends. It is no secret that phone makers nowadays are trying to build bigger and bigger devices. Phablets are certainly increasing in popularity, with most flagship devices from mobile manufacturers likely to belong in the phablet category, or at least offer a phablet variant. Also, display screens seem to be growing size, with more and more new handsets appearing to favor the bezel-less approach to design.
But the ACSI report seems to suggest that consumers may not be thinking the same. Based on the results of the survey, the iPhone SE scored a score of 87 out of a possible 100 in terms of consumer satisfaction. Not only did the handset beat the more high profile iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus devices, but also other popular fare like Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and Note 5. The survey also shows that people rank Apple as the top phone maker in terms of consumer satisfaction. Still, it is worth noting that the ACSI has not specifically explained how exactly it went about setting up metrics in order to properly evaluate the level of satisfaction among mobile users.
Metrics notwithstanding, the results of the ACSI’s survey is indeed surprising in some level. After all, when Apple first debuted the iPhone SE more than a year ago, it did draw some flak from critics over its familiar design (which basically mimics that of the classic iPhone 5), and rather limited storage configuration (at just 16 gigabytes of built in memory).
But consumers apparently do not share the critics’ views. Granted, the iPhone SE may have presented some advantages to people that other devices could not. The device’s pricing certainly does not hurt, at least when compared to other flagship smartphone offerings. And one can argue that expectations have something to do with it -- quite simply, the iPhone SE was never positioned as a game changer, and because mobile users knew exactly what they were getting when they purchased the device, they were more likely to be satisfied with it.
