Boy, that was fast. Apple started accepting preorders for its highly awaited iPhone X at 12:01 AM Pacific Time earlier today, and those who were among the first to preorder got a shipping date of November 3rd (the official launching date of the flagship device). But after just 10 minutes, the shipping dates of preordered units quickly began lengthening to two or even three weeks. By 12:30 AM, virtually all shipping dates have stretched to four or five weeks, depending on which specific model configuration and on which wireless service provider.
This was actually kind of expected -- a few days ago, numerous reports indicate that the initial supply of iPhone X units will be limited during launch, and even Apple has gone as far as strongly encouraging would-be iPhone X buyers to get to the store early on November 3rd in order to be able to purchase the device.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the existence of the original iPhone (released in 2007), and there has been considerable excitement over the iPhone models launching this year. Somewhat unexpectedly, Apple strayed from its usual tradition of introducing two new iPhone models every year by unveiling three new offerings -- namely the iPhone X, the iPhone 8, and the iPhone 8 Plus. The iPhone 8 devices were launched more than a month ahead of the iPhone X, marking the first time that Apple has adapted separate release dates for new iPhones. Reception for the iPhone 8 devices, however, has been less than stellar, with reports stating that last year’s iPhone 7 devices are actually outselling the follow up models. There is even talk that the iPhone 8 devices will undergo production cuts, to make way for the iPhone X, which is not only considered the superior model, but evidently the more in-demand, too.
There are plenty of reasons so many consumers are excited for the iPhone X. It has been years since Apple introduced a significant redesign to its most popular product, and the iPhone X delivers with some really cool new features -- chief among them is the Face ID facial scanning technology, as well as a new OLED screen that nearly spans the smartphone’s entire front face.
For Apple, the high demand for the iPhone X should be very welcome news. The tech giant, after all, had to go through four consecutive quarters of declining iPhone sales last year. Even the whole smartphone market has been slow, with 2016 producing the smallest growth rate ever for the industry.
