This year’s Mobile World Congress happens on the latter part of February in the beautiful city of Barcelona in Spain. Various phone makers are widely expected to unveil their newest smartphone offerings during this major mobile technology related event. One of them is LG, who many predict will announce its new flagship device, the G5 smartphone, which will most likely compete for attention against fellow South Korean phone maker Samsung’s own flagship device the Galaxy S7.
Not much was known before regarding the specifications of the LG G5 device, but according to an exclusive report by Android Authority, it appears that LG’s newest flagship will feature a sort of revolutionary new design. The G5 will reportedly mark a departure from the familiar look of past G smartphone models -- sporting a slimmer body, while being taller and wider than any of its predecessors. For comparison, the current LG G4 has dimensions of 148.9 by 76.1 by 6.3-9.8 millimeters, while the LG G5 is said to measure 149.4 by 73.9 by 8.2 millimeters.
Moreover, it appears that with the upcoming LG G5 device, the South Korean tech giant has decided to shift the volume keys to the side of the smartphone instead of placing them on the rear section, as can be seen on the thicker previous G models. The power key will still be likely kept on the same location (beneath the camera on the rear side). LG’s G5 will also come with a fingerprint reader, just like the Nexus 5X, the result of the company’s latest Nexus collaboration with Google.
As for the frame itself, the G5’s will come with a radical new design that does away with the usual rear plate for the battery compartment. Instead, the device’s entire bottom part is made removable, allowing the battery to easily slide in and out of the body. Because the entire bottom section remains intact, the design could allow for more structural integrity, at the same time, offering a convenient sword on sheath maneuverability. Plus, it looks to have an all metal build, which should offer durability and elegance.
Other rumored specifications include a 5.6 inch display screen with QHD resolution, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip set, twin rear camera, 3 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM), expandable memory, and a USB C port, among many others.
With the upcoming official announcement of the G5 smartphone, LG is hoping to create some momentum after following up the release of its acclaimed G4 device with the launch of its premium range LG V10 handset late in 2015. The company certainly needs to have a strong start in 2016, considering that Samsung is also looking to make some noise early in the new year.
