Attention, T-Mobile subscribers who love to hunt for Pokemon -- the data you consume while playing the Pokemon Go mobile game will not be counted against your data plan for one whole year. This is part of the wireless carrier’s T-Mobile Tuesdays free giveaway program, and will take effect on July 19th of this year. In order to avail of this perk, subscribers of the third biggest wireless carrier in the United States will have to use the T-Mobile Tuesdays mobile app, which also offers $15 toward a Lyft booking, a free Wendy’s Frosty, and a discount on battery packs. Moreover, 250 users will each get $100 in PokeCoins, and 5 users will win a Pokemon Go hunting trip anywhere in the US for themselves, and they can even choose a hunting partner to go with them.
Pokemon Go has already surpassed other apps in terms of usage, including the Tinder dating app, and is chasing social media giant Twitter. Quite an achievement especially when you consider that the augmented reality game has only been made available to mobile users for just barely a week.
For those living in a cave for the past few days, the Pokemon Go mobile game places those cute and weirdly named monsters in the real world, and allows mobile users to assume the role of a Pokemon trainer who not only must catch Pokemon, but also train them and even have these critters duel other Pokemon captured by other players.
As far as anybody can tell, playing the Pokemon Go game can result to drained smartphone or tablet batteries, which is hardly a surprise considering the lengths mobile users go in order to catch them all. But when it comes to data, initial reports indicate that it does not eat up as much data as anybody would expect. For instance, a spokesperson from Verizon Wireless had stated that Pokemon Go consumed less than 1 percent of the mobile operator’s data traffic last Tuesday.
Still, Pokemon Go players, especially those under any of T-Mobile’s data plans, will be glad to know that they can go hunt for Pokemon without having to worry about their data allowances getting affected. This is actually very consistent with what the wireless carrier has been offering the last few months. Indeed, what T-Mobile is doing with its free Pokemon Go data offer mirrors what it has already been doing with its Binge On for video content and Music Freedom for audio tracks.
