Last month, Xiaomi broke records when it surpassed Apple’s title as the second-largest phone maker in the world. With this accomplishment, it looks like the Chinese manufacturer is ready to change its direction and drop the “Mi” branding on its devices.
A spokesperson for the company revealed their plans for this new change.
“Starting in 2021 Q3, Xiaomi’s product series ‘Mi’ will be renamed to ‘Xiaomi’. This change will unify our global brand presence and close the perception gap between the brand and its products.”
The first device to not carry the brand is the upcoming Mix 4 phone, which was revealed earlier this month.
But despite this announcement, the Mi branding will not be going away completely. In fact, it has been revealed that its Mi Home stores will continue bearing the name.
In addition to this, Xiaomi intends to continue selling its Redmi devices. These devices are targeted at customers who are looking to save money on their phone purchase. Over time, Xiaomi plans to apply the product series naming convention of both Xiaomi and Redmi to its ecosystem and IoT products.
