Yesterday, it was reported that Google had released Android 13 for Pixel device users. Unfortunately, there seems to be a weird update that comes from this premature OS release.
While there are some who have been successful at updating to the newest OS version, several Pixel device users received a prompt to upgrade their device to Android 12 instead of Android 13.
As shared by Android Authority, the Check For Updates button did not yield any result upon the OS’ launch time yesterday. And today, the publication shared that they got a “introducing Android 12” welcome message instead. The weird thing about this is that the Pixel devices that got this message already operate on Android 12. The update simply changes the build number instead of updating the OS version on the device.
And apparently, this issue is not only affecting the publication. Several other users have taken to Reddit and Twitter to report similar instances with their Pixel devices. Android Authority has already reached out to Google but has not received a response at this time.
In another report by PhoneArena, the devices that were able to successfully update to Android 13 faced another issue. The update actually removed a new feature that appeared on earlier Android 13 beta versions.
Those who were able to update to Android 13 found that their unified search feature has disappeared after a phone reboot. After updating to Android 13, device users found that the two search bars are no longer unified.
As shared in the report, Google is already aware of this issue and promised that it will return in “an upcoming release.” If the missing feature doesn’t bother you that much, you can go ahead and install Android 13 on your phone. You can do this by going to Settings > System > System update.
Do note, however, that once you update your device to Android 13, you won’t have an option to go back to Android 12; especially if you’re using any of the Google Pixel 6 variants. So you’ll have to decide whether the missing unified search feature will affect you that much. Otherwise, you can proceed with the update.
