According to a recent report published by French website Consomac just this week, it appears that Apple has registered a number of unreleased iPhone model numbers with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), which is basically the regulatory body of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).
Which model numbers exactly? They include A1920, A1921, A1984, A2097, A2098, A2099, A2101, A2103, A2104, A2105, and A2106. As indicated in the filing with the EEC, each of these model numbers pertain to a smartphone manufactured by Apple that is powered by iOS 11, the current latest version of the tech giant’s mobile operating system that was officially rolled out back in September of last year.
Those numbers represent 11 different models, so can we then expect 11 new iPhones coming soon? Before we get a little bit too excited, it needs to be said that Apple has often utilized varying model numbers that actually refer to a single iPhone model. Take last year’s iPhone X, for instance -- the super popular device actually uses the model numbers A1865, A1901, and A1902. The model numbers usually differ depending on which specific mobile market the iPhone X is being sold, and also which mobile operator is selling the handset. In other words, it is quite possible that those 11 model numbers mentioned earlier simply represent around three to four iPhone models.
Could the iPhone SE 2 be one of them? There is a chance, but we have no way knowing for sure just yet. Still, fans of the original iPhone SE should still get excited -- since the iPhone SE hit store shelves back in March 2016, it has since become a sort of fan favorite, helped immensely by the fact that it is simpler, smaller (which is easier on the hands compared to most of today’s phablets), and cheaper. Last year, the iPhone SE got an upgrade in terms of storage capacity, but many will agree, especially the model’s legion of fans, that a next generation offering is due.
There certainly is no shortage of rumors surrounding a possible follow up to the 2016 original. About five months ago, there were reports that Apple was planning to release the iPhone SE 2 in July later this year. Some are even predicting that the iPhone SE 2 will turn out to be one of the three new iPhones that Apple is expected to launch during the second half of 2018. This trio of new models are said to be inspired by the specifications and features of the iPhone X.
