Industry watchers Steven Milunovich and Benjamin Wilson from UBS fully expect that Apple’s next flagship device, specifically the follow up to last year’s iPhone X, will come with a price of $1,100 when it gets released later this year. With that pricing, the new iPhone model would basically cost a hundred bucks more than the already expensive $1,000 iPhone X.
The two UBS analysts also reckoned that the iPhone X’s sales performance may not be as stellar as previously thought, and the model’s steep pricing may have something to do with it (more on this later). It is no secret that high profile smartphone releases are getting pricier these days. The result is that those consumers who can afford to purchase high end handsets often end up being the only mobile users across the globe that get to enjoy the latest advances in mobile technology. As for those budget conscious buyers, they likely will have to settle for midrange or inexpensive options that are not actually not bad per se, but do not quite deliver the best iOS (or Android) experience possible.
Apple actually can do something to help narrow that expanding gap -- it can start by offering less expensive devices. One can argue that the tech giant is actually already doing something of this sort. When compared with the pricier iPhone X, the two other 2017 flagships -- the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus -- actually do appear as cheaper options. Then there is always the fan favorite iPhone SE, and even if an upgraded model will be released later this year, it will most likely still be less expensive than the usual iPhones. Also, Apple can continue to offer discounted prices on older iPhones.
Noted Apple seer Ming-Chi Kuo had already predicted that 2018 will see Apple debut three new iPhone models, each inspired by the iPhone X. Specifically, these three will consist of a 5.8 inch organic light emitting diode (OLED) iPhone model and a bigger 6.1 inch OLED model, as well as a cheaper 6.1 inch LCD iPhone.
Going back to the iPhone X, this particular iPhone model continues to be the center of much discussion and even debate. Before it was released, it was viewed by many as the iPhone model to rule them all, considering the fact that its launch coincided with the ten year anniversary of the iPhone’s existence. Upon its release, the device did wow critics and consumers alike, and even introduced some ground breaking technology (Face ID) and animoji. Back in January, there were reports naming the iPhone as the best selling smartphone of the holiday shopping season, especially in terms of the total volume of shipments across the globe. But in the ensuing weeks, there was talk about Apple halving the production run for the iPhone X, and even a possible discontinuation later this year. Some are even saying that while it is true that the model helped Apple register record shattering profits (due to the iPhone X’s high pricing), unit sales were not exactly mind blowing, at least when compared to previous years’.
