You might have already have of the Axon M, the new foldable smartphone device that ZTE had debuted back in October earlier this year. Well, for those of you interested in getting your hands on this twin screen marvel of a handset, you might want to check out what Best Buy is offering.
The concept of foldable smartphones is nothing new -- as a matter of fact, some of the world’s biggest phone makers, like Samsung and LG, have been reported to be exploring the idea as early as 2014 (Samsung even published a patent a year ago).
One can argue that ZTE officially got the ball rolling when it comes to foldable smartphone devices when it formally introduced its Axon M handset earlier this week. It goes without saying that other phone makers will definitely not just sit idly by. As a matter of fact, another Chinese mobile giant, Huawei, has revealed that it is also busy polishing its own take on the foldable phone concept, and the company promises that its offering will likely debut some time next year.
Just a week ago, rumors of Apple developing a foldable iPhone model surfaced in the interwebs. The talk was that the tech giant was teaming up with LG in order to start building a smartphone with a foldable OLED screen possibly three years from now. Well, unlike the iPhone maker, ZTE is not waiting until the end of the decade to showcase its own take on the foldable phone concept.
According to a blog post recently published by ZeroFOX, it had found more than 500 fake accounts throughout various social media platforms (including popular ones like Facebook, Instagram, and even YouTube) that all offer iPhone X giveaway deals, but are actually scams. Most of these spam offers are designed for one thing -- to get consumers to supply their personal data.
Two of the most prominent brands in the world of mobile are looking to bring fully functioning foldable smartphone devices to life as early as this year. As reported by the Korea Herald, South Korea’s biggest phone makers, Samsung and LG, both have plans to release bendable handsets in 2017.
Flip phones became a hit several years ago, and now the world’s biggest smartphone vendor is thinking of updating the concept of a flip phone, but with never before seen mobile technology. Samsung recently published a patent that comes with a few renders of a mobile device that is capable of completely folding down its middle section.
Well, well, well, the plot thickens. One day after Lenovo showed off the Cplus, a sort of prototype of a bendable smartphone that actually has the ability to wrap around a user’s wrist (just like those slap bracelets of old), Samsung has revealed officially that, yes, the South Korean tech giant is also working on its own bendable devices and is planning to launch them by 2017. It was confirmed by Gregory Lee, the head of Samsung’s North America operations, as reported by Recode.
At the recent Tech World conference held in the city of San Francisco in California, not only did Lenovo unveil new Phab2 devices (the Phab2 Pro, the Phab2, and the Phab2 Plus) and new Motorola flagship devices (the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force), the Chinese tech giant also took the opportunity to reveal that it is busy exploring technology that would allow it to manufacture smartphones that come with bendable screens and can be worn around users’ wrists, like those nifty slap bracelets.
Maybe not. But that has not stopped top phone makers like Samsung and LG from trying. As a matter of fact, Samsung has gone on record just last month that it is working on a few designs that it might push to its manufacturers. It may be a long shot, but we could be seeing a working prototype in a year or so, and even a finished product for end users soon after.
Apart from the capacitive touchscreen revolution that begun in 2007, courtesy of the game-changing launch of the first ever iPhone, smartphone technology has not changed that much. Yes, we have seen upgrades year after year in terms of processor performance, displaying colors on screens, and materials used. But none so far that sparked the whole mobile industry the way Apple did seven years ago.
